Learn the Realities of Music
I didn’t think I’d ever learn music theory until I talked with Bill Hilt. It was a Sunday afternoon at Chipotle in Clintonville where he took out a pen and started writing on a napkin. He began showing me the math and science behind the reality of music.
I’ll be honest, he moved pretty fast on that napkin. I don’t remember everything he showed me. But in that 5 minutes Bill Hilt became the Bill Nye of music. He opened my eyes, man. It was in that moment that I realized I’d probably learn music theory if I could learn it fast, and with my friends… Enter CSA. Enter music theory workshop. Enter fun challenge:
Learn the Realities of Music
3 sessions, 2 hours each.
Nov, 8, 15, 22 at 4-6pm.
Just 40 bucks for the whole thing.
After Bill did the napkin thing, I called up Diane Boston from Columbus Folk Music Society. Their organization agreed to split the cost of a cool room at the Jazz Academy (Lincoln Theatre) that has about 15 computers with midi keyboards. Easy. Meant to be. Bill is going to lead us in ““Exploring the Universe of the Principles of Music, Including Practical Music Theory”. Again, I’m inviting our friends, songwriters, musicians, and composers to come together and take the challenge.
It might be a creative struggle and mental challenge for me, but I’m going to weather it with my friends. Throw in $40 and join me. Let’s learn something new. Are you with me?

CSA Showcase is back!
CSA Showcase Is Back!
We’re trying out a brand new room and stage at Notes, the newest music venue in downtown Columbus. And we’ve got some cool changes to our monthly event:
- Showcase runs 3-5pm on Sunday, October 4th. This afternoon time is the perfect time to gather, so we can avoid those late nights before manic Mondays.
- Notes will be helping promote our showcase so we can grow what we do.
- The room at Notes is bigger, seats about 150 with tables and chairs.
- The stage is wider. It’s the perfect setup for a 4-member group of songwriters.
- The speakers at Notes deliver a state-of-the-art “surround sound” that will create an ideal listening room environment for our guests.
- Songwriters will be able to stow guitars in the green room at Notes. We’ll avoid clutter, and groups will have an easy place to gear up before jumping on stage.
- CSA Committee meet ups will be held in the VIP room at Notes. This is a private gathering space we’ll have access to before the event.
Other cool things:
- Notes has an incredible, chef-prepared menu complete with flat breads, $6 mac n’ cheese, and other shareable dishes.
- Above Notes is a highly regarded comfort food restaurant, currently open for dinner hours. In the future, their lunch crowd may venture downstairs to discover our unique event, and become supporters of the Columbus songwriting culture.
- Notes is booking opening acts for some of their weekday shows. bringing our showcase to this venue may lead to more gigs and opportunities for our members. RSVP on FACEBOOK

Increasingly, Columbus, Ohio, is finding itself at or near the top of the list in terms of national rankings. Be it shopping (No. 4), sexual satisfaction (No. 3), or intelligence (No. 1), Columbus is consistently being recognized as a national leader. But where does it rank as a music city?
Chances are, if you’re not from here you’re probably not aware of the talent-rich music scene in Columbus, but there is a growing number of artists, musicians and entrepreneurs who are intent on changing that.
On June 25, more than 150 Columbus artists and city leaders gathered at the Garden Theater in the Short North for the second annual “How To Build A Music City” event, hosted by the Columbus Songwriters Association (CSA). The purpose of the meeting was to discuss local music and explore new ways to grow and support it.

Experts from around the country and within the community spoke to a room full of students, creatives and Columbus advocates, on topics ranging from music licensing to best practices, networking and the impact of local music on the city. Continue reading “The Making of A Music City”
